Car rental or hire in Spain is widely available, relatively cheap and easy to organise - either through your tour operator or by booking direct from the hire company on-line. There are thousands of car hire firms to choose from so do some research before you book your vehicle because standards vary enormously and cheapest doesn't always mean best.
You'll find hired cars come in all shapes and sizes to suit all needs and budgets. The big international companies such as Avis and Hertz are well represented at all the major international airports such as Madrid, Barcelona, Valencia, Alicante and Malaga. With one of the big names, you can be sure of certain quality standards and you won't have to worry about the pitfalls of dealing with a cowboy operator. It's convenient to have the firm's representatives on hand at the airport and if you're traveling out of season you can normally book a vehicle on arrival. But if you have the time and inclination to shop around you'll find there are plenty of small but reputable car rental firms in Spain offering excellent value for money.
If you opt for budget car hire you may not get all the extra comforts such as air conditioning, electric windows and a CD player. Whilst you may be able to manage quite happily without a CD player, you might find that driving in southern Spain in July or August without air conditioning is a bit like sitting in a sauna fully clothed! So it's important to check exactly what you're getting for your money.
The widest choices of cheap car hire are to be found around the biggest charter airports serving the package holiday industry, particularly Alicante on the Costa Blanca and Malaga on the Costa del Sol.
